An Introduction To Photo Editing

Not all the photographs that are shot turn out to be perfect right out of the camera. Photo editing is the process whereby we can make some manipulation to the image so that it turns out to be much better looking than what it looked like when it came out of the camera. Photo editing techniques can also be used with trick photography to create dramatic effects out of a photograph.

In the age of film cameras, photo editing was a tedious process. The size of a standard 35mm negative is too small to allow much editing to be done. Moreover it also means that the negative would be gone forever. On the other hand if photo editing was to be done on a print, creating multiple identical copies was almost impossible. Thanks to the emergence of digital photography, photo editing has become way easier.

Today photo editing is done on computers. Most of the photographers have moved on to digital cameras. There are cameras with resolutions as high as 16 mega pixels available in the market. These cameras take near film quality photographs. Moreover most of the existing negatives have also been scanned using high quality negative scanners and turned into computerized image files.

These images can be easily modified using image editing tools. Large scale efforts are under way to protect a number of photographs using photo editing techniques. These images are edited to remove any noise and dust, correct the exposure and sharpen the images for any blurred parts. Stains can be easily removed and compensatory correction work is also being done to preserve a number of images that form a world heritage.

What is more, thanks to the coming of digital era, photo editing is no more an area for professionals. Any person with a digital camera, a personal computer and an image editing software can do photo editing. There are a number of photo editing software solutions in the market like Corel Paint Shop Pro, Paint.Net, Adobe Fireworks but king of the hill is Adobe Photoshop which brought photo editing to the masses.

In popular terminology, photo editing is also known as Photoshopping. The term comes from the software Adobe Photoshop which is the industry standard for image manipulation and photo editing. The software does not face the criticism faced by most other products that have a market monopoly. Even though Adobe discourages the usage of the term, photo editing in the computer age has become synonymous with Photoshop.

Before you take up photo editing and put your photos at public display online, be considerate about the fact that there are copyright laws involved in the game as well. You cannot just copy and paste any image anywhere. Be mindful that photo editing has its own pros and cons and they must be kept in mind.
